Dell U3224KB 6K Display: Awesome Images
Related: 4K and 5K display, 6K display, Apple 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra, Apple iOS, Apple iPhone and iPad, Apple Silicon, computer display, digital sensor, display, Fujifilm medium format, iOS, Leica M, Mac Pro, medium format, Retina display
I tested the Dell U3224KB 6Kon the 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra; it worked flawlessly from the start. The only thing I did was to set the Color Space calibration to Display P3.
Images look fantastic. The 6K resolution feels much more immersive and detailed than 5K (21 vs 14 megapixels)—I was 'sold' right away. It’s a very nice upgrade from 5k at 27 inches. I think part of the impression is the increased details and part of it is the 32-inch size.
Were I to buy/keep the Dell 6K (very likely), I would likely arrange it as my main display as it is just too gorgeous a view to make it secondary. The NEC PA302W (critical to my work) would still be there for evaluating image sharpness and critical calibrated color.

The Dell 6K offers 6144 X 3456 resolution ~= 21.2 megapixels. This is notably higher than the 6016 X 3384 of the Apple Pro Display XDR. That difference doesn’t sound like much, but the extra 128 pixels is important...
Perhaps more significant in practical terms, many digital cameras were and still are 24 or 26 megapixel resolution, ranging from 6000 X 4000 or thereabouts to 6192 X 4128 across range. The Dell 6K thus accommodates all 24MP and lower resolution cameras fully in the image width and is only a few pixels short for 26MP cameras (eg 6192 X 4128). Height is not quite enough, but short of an 8K display that’s the best you can do.
12 megapixels: 4032 X 3024 eg Apple iPhone
18 megapixels: 4928 X 3264 eg Leica M9 and Ricoh GR
20 megapixels: 5472 x 3648 eg Sony ZV-1
24 megapixels: 6000 X 4000 eg Leica M240 and Sony RX1R and many others
26 megapixels : 6240 x 4160 eg Fujifilm X-S20
36 megapixels: 8256 x 5504 Nikon D810 and Sony A7R
45 megapixels: 8256 x 5504 Nikon Z8
60 megapixels: 9504 x 6336 Sony A7R V
100 megapixels: 11646 X 8736 Fujifilm GFX100S
150 megapixels 14202 X 10650 PhaseOne IQ4 150
Can’t win 'em all—once you’re past ~26 megapixels things don’t fit well anymore.

What can fit onto a 6K display?
Let’s look at how the images possible in 2023 fit onto a 6K display, with a bit of historical perspective.
2012: Micro Four Thirds 16 megapixel sensor is competitive
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Olympus OM-D E-M5 captured 4608 X 3456 = 15.9 megapixels on a Micro Four Thirds sensor. The 3456 vertical pixels fit perfectly on a 6K display.
2013 — 24 megapixels rocks
The Leica M240 and a large number of cameras capture 5976 X 3992 = 24 megapixels or thereabouts. A full-resolution fit horizontally, with some cropped-off vertically. Various other cameras around this time were also at 24MP.
2017/2019 — 42 and 45 megapixels
The Sony A7R III got us to 42 megapixels back in year 2017. The Nikon D850 and many other cameras reaised that slightly to 8256 X 6192= 45 megapixel images. A 6K display is a bit less than half of the pixels. An 8K display (8192 X 5460) would fit almost the entire image.
2019 — 60 megapixels
The Sony A7R IV and Sony A7R V capture 9504 x 6336 = 60-megapixel images. The 6K display, having 21 megapixels, can show up only 1/3 of the pixels at a time.
2019 — 100 megapixels
The Fujifilm GFX100S and its 44 X 33mm sensor capture 11646 X 8736 = 100 megapixel images. The 6K display shows only 20% of the image.
2019 — 150 megapixels
The huge 53.4 X 24.0mm sensor of the super high-end PhaseOne IQ4 150 captures 14202 X 10650 = 151 megapixel images. The 6K display can only display a small portion... 16K display in 2028 perhaps?
2023 — 12 megapixel and faux-48 megapixel iPhone
My still-working iPhone 7 Plus and its 4032 X 3024 12-megapixel camera won’t fill the display.
